Kitty Here, 2022

At 13, two men approached me and made lewd comments about my appearance. These experiences continue to occur every time I enter the public eye. My alternative appearance is perceived as an invitation for strangers to harass me. My nickname, ‘Kitty’, emerged from the cat ears ever present on my head. They are the source of insults and a source of comfort. I have had many experiences due to my identity. This is not unique; it is something every member of alternative subcultures faces. I am lucky. I have never been physically injured. Others have. We are perceived as scary, as disgusting, as the ’Other’. This project attempts to subvert these expectations by offering a glimpse into my everyday life.
