Ryan Anderson

The basic principle of the idea for my project was to create a short film of around 5 minutes long which touches on a number of different issues in society. I wanted to showcase a range of different themes and approaches to film making in a way that feels unique and interesting to the viewer. I wanted to show the contrast between the harmony of nature and the destructiveness of modern society. I also wanted to use my film as an excuse to feel more free to be able to explore more abstract ways of film making and to be able to experiment with my themes and ideas to create something unique and personal.

Originally, my intent was to create a short documentary film about the effects of climate change but after careful consideration and thought I realised that the problems we face in society run much deeper and embedded into our psychology than just campaigning for environmental problems could solve. Obviously, these issues are very important in their own regard, however I wanted to scratch my philosophical itch and create something more abstract and contemplative. I wanted to create something that attacks the subconscious global mentally of societal progression that ultimately feels like an illusion to mask the horrors and animalistic nature of humanity.  I wanted to show that every single second this chaotic rush towards nothingness is consuming our society. It is the main reason that I decided to choose my first shot as a clock ticking back and forth, implying that so much is happening around the world in just a few seconds and it is becoming so hard for us to comprehend the complexity of the world that we are ultimately left without a collective reason for existing.
