The Immersive Arcade Workshop

We are running this bespoke industry workshop to give undergrad and postgrad students across Digital Media Production, Games, Animation, and Immersive Arts a valuable opportunity to gain greater professional insight into the future of interactive/immersive digital technologies, arts and design and their application within a range of industry contexts. Are you a Masters student looking to firm up your direction for your major project, or are looking for an additional research resource to align your work with the future of your discipline? Are you a second or third year student who is considering their next steps through and beyond university and wants to align themselves with future trends and advancements? This session is for you.
As part of the UKRI-funded Audience of the Future research and development programme, Digital Catapult has produced an online resource that documents a selection of influential UK-produced immersive projects from the year 2000 to today. The timeline was launched in 2021 and will receive a content refresh in March 2022. The timeline is an online resource aimed at students, researchers, and practitioners interested in creative immersive content and drawing inspiration from past work. This 90-minute workshop will introduce the resource and its context, followed by a creative exercise where participants will create new immersive and interactive concepts, prompted by the projects included in the timeline. The activity is aimed at helping participants to formulate study topics and/or inspire new concepts or research ideas.
The workshop is led by Aki Jarvinen who works as the Lead Immersive Technologist at Digital Catapult in London. Aki is an immersive researcher, designer, and technologist with 20 years of experience with interactive media. His areas of expertise include immersive design, prototyping, user experience, game design, design thinking, and strategic foresight.
