Student Stories – Liv Cooper

foundation year, Journalism, Media, PR, Students

Liv Cooper is a current final year student who studies Journalism, Public Relations and Media with a foundation year, who was drawn to doing this course after seeing her uncle have a successful career with his PR agency, in which allowed her to complete a few weeks’ worth of work experience every so often which introduced her to this career, which was a career she knew she would like to try. Liv has been a part of a part time internship since October which she has been doing alongside her degree which she will graduate from this year. Cooper heard about the internship through Carmel O’Toole where a previous student had been in touch. Liv’s job title is ‘Communications Intern’ where the role is very diverse as no two days are the same. Her job entails writing press releases, distributing them, doing some selling in to try and secure coverage, writing blog posts, keeping reports updated and trying to secure interviews or profiling ops. As well as this opportunity Liv also did part time work in the marketing department for GO Outdoors in her first year.

Liv would give this advice to people doing a creative course “Don’t worry if things get tough. People don’t always expect creative degrees to get as academically challenging as they do (I definitely didn’t!), but you’re here because you’re capable!” She also said that LinkedIn is probably the best place to find creative jobs as there’s active recruiters uploading and checking applications, it seems more responsive than job sites like Indeed. She was lucky enough to find her own opportunities due to having connections that made her aware, therefore didn’t seek help with career advisors.

I asked Liv “What would you recommend to others wanting to go into a creative career or placement?” and she answered with “It’s so worth doing, just to get a taste of what your future self may be doing for a career. It’s probably the best way to find out if it’s definitely something you want to pursue or not.” Liv’s story of employment and opportunities is extremely motivating to hear.
