Mask

We live in a culture where the surface value of an individual is more important than their content. Mask explores gender identity, specifically femininity, and the societal pressures on women. This project shows how western culture has put forward the idea of a perfect woman through signifiers such as makeup, clothing and overall appearances has set extremely high beauty standards for women. Through the use of absence of the self and removal, the essential signifiers of femininity are left. We see how makeup is used as a mask to perform femininity as gender identity based on western stereotypes and societal norms.
